In the Shadows of Angels excerpt
Ok. Here's an excerpt from In the Shadows of Angels, available February 1, 2010.
Ella lunged forward and grasped his forearm, promptly releasing it when his gaze lowered to her hand. Her finger trembled as she pointed to the gibbet. “You can’t kill him!”
“Why not?” Luke didn’t yell the words, but they struck her ears as though he’d screamed them.
She stared at him for a moment. This wasn’t a man who would bend simply because she asked him to. How far would she go to save Connor? How far would she need to go? Luke’s countenance didn’t change. A muscle at his jaw quivered. She fluttered her eyelashes, hoping her feminine wiles would soften him. “Please, don’t kill him.”
“He would kill me.”
“Take me in his place.”
“You would die for a man with no compassion?”
Ella couldn’t determine whether admiration or disbelief filled his voice. She hesitated, then nodded and hoped her ploy would work.
“Very well.” Luke shrugged lightly. “Release the traitor and seize the woman!”
Her stomach lurched. That, she hadn’t expected. So much for her feminine wiles! Before she could move her feet Luke swooped in and hefted her over his wide shoulder, carrying her like a sack of potatoes towards the gibbet. She kicked her feet and pounded her fists into his back but only succeeded in doing more damage to her hands than his tight muscles. “You can’t behead me!”
Luke dropped her to the ground where she scrambled for solid footing. She turned to him, aghast he would treat her with such hostility. This wasn’t what she asked of the book. Where were the warm and fuzzies?
